A Leave of Presence: Skill and Craft in the Temporary Stay

Clown Larvae at Circus School!

May 7th, 2014

I had the great good fortune this spring to be able to take a class in Clown Performance Styles at ASU from the astonishing Brian Foley. I’m still processing everything I learned, and I’m hoping I’ll get to follow him around like a baby duck take more classes from him in future. My classmates proved to be delightful, talented and creative young people and I expect to be saying “I knew them when” in very short order.

I was lucky to be able to offer my fellow clowns the chance to come try aerials, thanks to the generosity of Rachel Stegman at CSA.

Here is Alanna, fulfilling all her cirque dreams:

I always try to put people on the rope at least once in a class. Everyone was very brave and tried hard! Here’s Alanna again.

As always, anyone interested in taking an introductory lesson in static trapeze, corde lisse, or fabric, contact us at CSA (www.circusschoolofarizona.com).

Sculpture at the Ice House!

May 5th, 2014

The 3 items below (also seen on the “Smithing” page) appeared in an exhibit at the Ice House Phoenix on Friday evening. The exhibition (called “Sort of Sacred”) was a one-night group showing sponsored by the Arizona State Sculpture Collective at ASU.

“For Making Little Girls Ask Questions”. Bronze. 2014

The set is pretentiously entitled “For Making Little Girls Ask Questions”. This is for two reasons. First, I can’t stand “Untitled”. That’s just my personal haggis. At least call it “Cast Bronze Ring Series 1” or something. And second, because when I hand them to people, the first question is usually “What’s it for?” And third, if I have to come up with something to call the piece because of Reason One, I may as well go to the wall.

These were created as a series in my casting class at ASU, taught by the brilliant Victoria Altepeter. She took the picture, too. Several of my classmates also showed work, and I’m very pleased to be included with such talented company.

“Tourism is about going somewhere. Travel is about being somewhere.” Who originated this quote? If you have a clue, put it in the comments, thanks!
